Discover Zhongwei

Zhongwei offers one of northwest China’s most accessible desert-and-river travel experiences, combining the Yellow River, sand dunes, desert hotels, camel rides, starry skies, vineyards, local food, and a softer introduction to desert landscapes. Located in Ningxia, it is especially known for Shapotou and the meeting of desert scenery with the Yellow River.

A visit can include exploring Shapotou, riding camels, trying desert activities, walking along Yellow River viewpoints, staying in desert-style resorts, photographing sunset over dunes, and experiencing Ningxia food and wine culture. The best time to visit is May to June or September to October, when temperatures are more comfortable for desert travel. Zhongwei works well with Yinchuan, Helan Mountains, Alxa, Lanzhou, Badain Jaran, Tengger Desert, and wider northwest routes.
