Discover Hengshan

Hengshan offers one of China’s classic sacred mountain experiences, combining temple culture, forested trails, viewpoints, historic pilgrimage routes, Buddhist and Daoist heritage, and a calmer atmosphere than some of China’s most crowded mountain destinations. Usually referring to Mount Heng in Hunan, it is one of China’s Five Great Mountains and a meaningful destination for travelers interested in religion, nature, and mountain walking.

A visit can include temple visits, hiking mountain trails, taking cable cars, seeing sunrise viewpoints, exploring Nanyue town, and experiencing the atmosphere of a traditional Chinese pilgrimage mountain. The best time to visit is April to June or September to November, when the weather is comfortable for hiking. Hengshan works well with nearby destinations such as Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Furong Ancient Town, Fenghuang, and Guilin.
