Discover Karamay City

Karamay City offers a distinctive northwest China experience, combining desert landscapes, oil city history, geological landforms, wide roads, modern urban planning, and access to some of northern Xinjiang’s dramatic scenery. The city is especially known for its oil industry identity and nearby natural formations such as the World Ghost City area.

A visit can include exploring the city’s modern desert-edge character, visiting geological landscapes, seeing oil industry heritage, and using Karamay as a stop between Ürümqi and Altay/Kanas routes. The best time to visit is May to October, with autumn especially good for northern Xinjiang road trips. Karamay works well with Kanas Lake, Altay, Burqin, Sayram Lake, Ili, and Ürümqi.
