Discover Qinghai Lake

Qinghai Lake offers one of China’s most beautiful highland lake travel experiences, combining blue water, grasslands, prayer flags, cycling roads, birdlife, Tibetan and Hui cultural influences, and wide-open plateau scenery. Located in Qinghai, it is China’s largest inland lake and a major highlight of northwest road trips.

A visit can include driving around the lake, cycling selected sections, seeing grasslands and wildflowers, visiting lakeside viewpoints, photographing sunrise or sunset, and combining the lake with salt lake and plateau routes. The best time to visit is June to September, especially July and August for wildflowers and green grasslands. Qinghai Lake works well with Xining, Chaka Salt Lake, Qaidam Basin, Lanzhou, Tibet routes, and broader northwest China journeys.
