It is a useful stop for travelers exploring the highlands between Chengdu and northern Sichuan’s scenic areas.

A visit can include walking through the old town, seeing city gates and walls, exploring local markets, joining horse-riding routes, and using Songpan as a base for nearby nature destinations. The best time to visit is May to October, when highland weather and road conditions are generally better. Songpan works well with Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong, Chengdu, Zoige Grassland, and western Sichuan routes.
